Cameroonian designer Kibonen Nfi is behind the new look of Hollywood star Lupita Nyong’o. This Oscar-winning actress (for her role in 12 Years a Slave in 2014) was on the show of American presenter Ellen DeGeneres this past Wednesday, with one of the creations of the couturier originally from the North-Western region of Cameroon. Pride for Kibonen Nfi who is mainly inspired by the clothing heritage of this area of the country.
Creative Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the brand KibonenNY (NY for New York), Kibonen Nfi enhances her creations with embroidery and fabrics from her native Bamenda. A dexterity which produces “Afro Fused Fashion” and which appealed to Lupita Nyong’o, a celebrity of Kenyan origin.
By wearing twice in a row outfits created by Kibonen Nfi, Lupita Nyong’o (who was crowned most beautiful woman in the world in 2014 by the magazine People, Ed.) gives her a recognition vital in the fashion industry. Which obviously allows the Cameroonian designer to breakthrough in this industry generally rather closed off to African designers.
Kibonen’s marketing stunt has been chronicled in the American press. Lupita Nyong’o (33 years) continues her promotional media tour for the autobiographic movie Queen of Katwe in which she was cast in the leading role.
