Fuel prices have apparently increased since 1st January 2017

Per the rumour, the price of petrol moved from FCfa 630 to 740 and diesel from FCfa 575 to 640.

The memorandum issued by the Minister of Finance, Alamine Ousmane Mey, just put an end to the controversy on the increase in gas prices in Cameroon since December 2016. Pump prices remain unchanged according to said memorandum dated back to 28 December.

However, the rumour going around was that prices for petrol and diesel were respectively increased by FCfa 110 and 65 since 1st January 2016. But the document signed by the Minfi explains that these amounts were rather linked to the special tax on oil products (TSPP): FCfa 110 for petrol and FCfa 65 for diesel.

In other words, the Minfi explains, the TSPP (special tax) is applied to the purchase of fuel “as part of the public procurement”. These taxes are now at the expense of the contract recipient and not, as per previously, at the expense of the State budget. Moreover, a quick tour of filling stations in the city of Yaoundé, for example this 3 January 2017, the consumer can verify that petrol is still sold at FCfa 630 and diesel at FCfa 575.

If, for the time being, the facts proved the rumour wrong on the increase in fuel prices, it is worth noting that tensions were observed on the price of transportation in 2015 with the upward revision of 15% in the pump prices for fuels starting from 1 July 2014. But since 1 January 2016, prices for oil products decreased. The price of one litre of petrol moved from FCfa 650 to 630 and the one for diesel moved from FCfa 600 to 575.
