Travel agencies are applying prices of up to FCfa 10,000 in some cases for a one-way or return ticket between the two major cities.

At the end of December 2016, users of the inter-urban transport system between Yaoundé and Douala called upon the Cameroonian Consumers Association (LCC – Ligue Camerounaise des Consommateurs) to denounce the price increase.

According to the complainants, the price hike reached FCfa 10,000 instead of the usual FCfa 3,500 or 8,000, depending on the standing of the travel agency. A survey carried out by LCC helped in providing some clarity to the situation.

Actually, only one company, Touristique Express, decided to increase its prices from FCfa 8,000 to 10,000 on 23 December 2016 for a simple Yaoundé-Douala or Douala-Yaoundé one-way or return ticket. Delor Kamgaing, President of LCC raised this with the concerned travel agency to remind them of the n°2015/018 law dated 21 December 2015 on commercial activity in Cameroon, which in in Article 4 mentions that illegal prices are: “prices of goods or services different from the approved ones, whether prices or tariffs submitted for prior approval procedure”.

Éric Eloundou, Managing Director of the travel agency defended his establishment by repeating that his structure offers a “Classic” service, whose prices are accessible to all. However, he specified that the “777 service is reserved for a specific range of clients, reason for which the branches dedicated exclusively to this segment were developed”. In other words, the increase in the transport price from FCfa 8,000 to 10,000 is for “VIP” clients. The price hike does not affect the whole inter-urban transport sector.
