It is said that drinking a large gulp of water with head tilted forward can calm hiccups. Really?

A well-known belief in Cameroon indicates that to calm hiccups, the affected person should take nine sips of water. This is not so true. In fact, doctors recommend drinking a large cup of water in one gulp. There is thus no need to drink by sips.

It is also recommended to drink from a glass of water with head tilted forward and chin inside the glass for the drinker to concentrate, because the phrenic nerve is affected, Passeportsante.net explains.

The phrenic nerve, located between the neck and the chest, innervates the diaphragm. It is essential for breathing because it allows the diaphragm’s contraction and relaxation. When it is irritated, irregular air flows into the diaphragm occurs, which reacts with spasms that lead to myoclonic jerk commonly known as a hiccup.

This remedy only works for mild hiccups that last between seconds and minutes and do not require therapeutic care. Nonetheless, there are various "miracle remedies" to calm hiccups; some work better than others.
