Health advice is provided to players following the WHO guidelines

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is closely monitoring the coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in Cameroon. Indeed, in the host country of the African Nations Championship (Chan), 2 cases were confirmed on March 6 and currently, 171 suspected individuals are quarantined.

"CAF authorities are not extremely worried. However, they remain alert concerning future matches and tournaments such as the Champions League, the Confederation Cup and the final tournament of Chan to be held in Cameroon next month from 4 to 25 April 2020," said the Caf, in a statement published on its website on March 6.

"If the situation requires so, in agreement with the countries concerned, possible closed sessions, postponements or even cancellations could be considered," says the CAF. In the meantime, in the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), health advice is provided to players, the governing body informs.

Also, management of the CAF instructed its Medical Commission to monitor the development of the disease and to implement early warning measures to protect the health of footballers and all those involved. A commission including experts and doctors has already been set up under the authority of CAF President Ahmad Ahmad.

Three of the 16 countries qualified for Chan 2020 are now affected by the new coronavirus. They are Morocco (defending champion), Cameroon and Togo.

As a reminder, the Chan is a competition reserved for African football players playing in local leagues. The organization of the 2020 edition had been awarded to Cameroon after it was withdrawn from Ethiopia due to delays in preparation works. This 8th edition will serve as a test for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Cameroon will host next year.
