Rumors suggest Camtel has fired a number of its employees this month. True?

Yes Cameroon’s incumbent telecom operator Camtel did fire workers this January 2019.

For some time now, a rumor has been circulating about Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel) suggesting the incumbent telecom operator in Cameroon has fired a number of its employees. However, there was so far no proof to support that rumor.

Yet, there is an information note signed January 24, 2019 by Judith Yah Sunday, Camtel’s Managing Director wherein the company shed light on the matter. According to the memo, following the disciplinary board's work from 5 to 7 December 2017 and 30 and 31 October 2018, certain agents were accused of “misappropriation of company assets”, “financial malpractice”, “financial scams”, “cable theft”, “forgery and counterfeiting”, “fraudulent line trafficking” and “unjustified absence”.

“These unacceptable acts constitute a loss of trust with negative repercussions on Cameroon Telecommunications' image,” wrote the MD stressing that 17 people are no longer part of the company's workforce.

“Any staff member, of whatever category, who acts like that will simply be dismissed without any other form of trial,” she threatened.
