Promotion of official languages : CNPBM concludes a vulgarization seminar in Yaoundé

The aim of that seminar was to explain the December 24, 2019 law on the promotion of official languages to the members of that commission

On February 28, 2020, the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism (CNPBM), chaired by former Prime Minister Peter Mafany Musonge (photo), concluded, a vulgarization seminar in Yaoundé.

The aim of the seminar was to explain the December 24, 2019 law on the promotion of official languages to the members of the commission.

This law aims to ensure equality in the use of English and French in public administrations and public bodies. It also seeks to encourage Cameroonians to express themselves in these two languages (whose use, within private institutions, employers' and trade union organizations as well as civil society organizations, is encouraged by the government).

The training session organized by the CNPBM is the first stage of a nationwide campaign. It aims to provide members of this institution (who are major actors in the vulgarization of the December 24, 2019, law) with the effective tools to explain the law and its merits during a special campaign.

Indeed, the review and adoption of the law have not resolved all the discrepancies contained in it. Due to that fact, the President of the Republic instructed the CNPBM to organize a special campaign to explain the law and raise public awareness.

According to Peter Mafany Musonge, "the law on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon is one of the results of the national dialogue (organized from 27 September to 4 October 2019 to ease socio-political tensions in Cameroon). It is therefore important that it be carefully applied."
