Social media users are sharing information according to which the telecommunication operator will soon launch works to replace its optical fiber.

Dear clients, following replacement works on our cable supporting the optical fiber, internet service will be suspended on October 7-9, 2018”. This message supposedly sent by the telecommunication operator MTN Cameroon to its subscribers is being shared on social media. This compelled the operator to publish a denial on August 9, 2018.

In the denial, MTN Cameroon writes that “some malicious individuals, exposing themselves to legal sanctions, are sharing fake information claiming that MTN is planning a suspension of its internet services in Cameroon on October 7-9, 2018 due to replacement works on its optical fiber”.

The operator informs that it sent no such message to its subscribers. It also says that the visuals being shared on social media is just a montage whose contents are grossly misleading.

MTN Cameroon also explains that “MTN is not in charge of the optical fiber and couldn’t, therefore, plan its replacement”.

It finally ensures of the availability of its internet services and invites the public to be careful with these nuisances called “fake news”.
