René Jacques Ngouo Woungly Massaga, alias Commander Kissamba, an emblematic figure of the political party the Union of the Populations of Cameroon (UPC), is suffering from a multitude of ailments. These include diabetes, heart problems, and kidney failure.

The information was reported by Marcel Thierry Massaga, who introduced himself to SBBC as the son of the elder sister of the man who is also one of the founders of Manidem, a division of the UPC. According to him, even if the 84-year-old political actor keeps all his lucidity, “his general pathological state keeps deteriorating day by day, for lack of appropriate care.”

In a letter dated June 25, 2020, the man’s family asked the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, “to facilitate a medical evacuation in South Africa or elsewhere, to allow Patriarch Woungly Massaga to benefit from specialized care.” The correspondence addressed to Paul Biya states that “the epidemiological opinion and expertise establish the need and necessity to resort to specialized care not available locally.”

In this letter, the family also thanked the Head of State who, in the past, has shown “magnanimity and humanity in authorizing the payment and reimbursement of medical expenses incurred by the family.” The former President of the National Union of Students of Kamerun (UNEK) was then “in deep human and material distress.”
