Indomitable Lions: FECAFOOT Questions Legitimacy of Marc Brys Appointment

Marc Brys (photo), 61, has been appointed as the new head coach of Cameroon’s national football team, the Indomitable Lions, according to a statement issued by Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, on Tuesday, April 2. The appointment follows directives from the Head of State, the statement added.

Brys, a Belgian national, succeeds Rigobert Song, whose contract was not renewed following Cameroon’s elimination in the round of 16 at the recent African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. While Brys may be a new name to many Cameroonian fans, he has a well-established coaching career in Belgium, having led several clubs including Oud Heverlee Leuven. Brys had been unemployed since his contract with Leuven ended in October 2023 due to what was reported by Belgian public broadcaster RTBF as a “below expectations” performance during the season. He also has coaching experience in the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, but this is his first appointment with a national team.

The Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), in a statement responding to the appointments, expressed surprise, stating that the move contradicts the terms of Decree No. 2014/384 of 26 September 2014 on the organization and functioning of national football teams. Fecafoot, having learned of the appointments “at the same time as all Cameroonians,” pledged to investigate the situation and communicate its response promptly.

Brys faces a challenging task, with just two months to prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June. The Lions are set to play Cape Verde on June 3, followed by Angola on June 10 in the African Zone qualifiers. The key question is whether Brys will be able to assemble a strong, cohesive squad and whether some of the key players who were previously sidelined or left out of the squad will return for the next meeting. Brys will be assisted by two Cameroonian assistant coaches, François Omam Biyick, who is returning to the squad, and Ashu Cyprien Besong.
