Cameroon's Oldest Lawmaker Slams Parliament's 'Poor Performance'

Laurentine Koa Mfegue, Cameroon’s oldest lawmaker on Tuesday slammed the poor performance of the current parliament, which has one year left in its five-year term, and urged her colleagues to do more to address the country’s pressing problems.

As the oldest member of the parliament, Laurentine Koa Mfegue, a member of the ruling party opened the first session of the year as the interim speaker of the National Assembly and said she was disappointed by the lack of results achieved by the legislature.

Looking back on the time that has passed, I have to ask myself the following questions: what have we done with these 48 months of our mandate? Have we all lived up to the trust placed in us by Cameroonians? I could be wrong, but the overall assessment would be: we could do better,” she said.

She accused some lawmakers of engaging in “intrigue, denunciation, slanderous denunciations, often via social networks, positioning wars, business dealings and the unbridled pursuit of money” and others of being absent from plenary sessions.

She contrasted this indiscipline with the urgency of the issues facing the citizens, such as poor sanitation, bad roads, corruption, power cuts, water shortages, and inadequate health facilities.

She said the parliament had passed some laws, but questioned whether it had done enough to defend the interests of the electorate and to hold the authorities accountable.

Who would prevent - but then, who would dare prevent - a group of elected representatives from knocking on the door of these authorities to enquire about a given situation, to prompt action?” she asked.

The current parliament was elected in March 2020 and is due to end its term in February 2025. However, the president has the power to postpone the legislative elections by one year, as he has done in the past, to avoid a clash with the presidential election in 2025.
