In the 2023/2024 academic year, only properly dressed students will be admitted onto the premises of the Yaoundé National Advanced School of Engineering (Enspy), according to a decision issued by Professor Raoul Domingo Ayissi, rector of the school.
According to the academic executive, proper dress means a shirt, pants, traditional dress, city dress, suit; for men. And for women: dress, suit, traditional dress, skirt, etc.
The same goes for hairstyles: Men are only allowed to wear their hair short, well-coiffed, and "with no fancy,” while women are allowed to wear "braids and decent hairstyles".
The rector bans piercings and tattoos, colored streaks, panties, low-cut tops, slim-fitting pants, skirts or dresses above the knees, and long dreadlocks.
Enspy is not the first higher education institution to introduce a strict dress code for students. A few years ago, the universities of Yaoundé I and II introduced controversial measures to filter entrances based on dress codes.
