The French embassy in Cameroon condemned an armed attack that killed a Cameroonian soldier serving with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
According to a Facebook post by the French diplomatic mission, the attack occurred on Monday, January 15, 2024, in Mbindale, Lim Pendé prefecture, in the Central African Republic.
Minusca confirmed the attack in a press release dated January 15, stating that an improvised explosive device targeted a patrol near Mbindale village. "Peacekeeper Atebele Emmanuel Steve sadly lost his life," the statement said. "Five other peacekeepers were injured, two seriously," and received treatment in Pougol and Bouar.
Bouar is the traditional base for the Cameroonian contingent of Minusca. Private Emmanuel Steve Atebele served as part of the 10th Cameroonian contingent deployed in September 2023. France called for the perpetrators to be identified and held accountable.
