John Fru Ndi will be officially buried on July 29 at Baba II, in the Mezam department of the North-West region. Cameroonian President Paul Biya signed the decree instituting a state funeral for the chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) on July 26.
"From the depth of my heart, I believe this will be a historic day,” commented Célestin Djamen, a former SDF executive who is now leading another party. He is one of the first politicians to call for a state funeral for John Fru Ndi, whom he described as "the biological father of multiparty politics" in Cameroon.
Several executives of the ruling party (CPDM) also salute the memory of the late politician who died on June 12 of illness in Yaoundé. "He was very committed to freedoms, to democracy and peace. He was fundamentally opposed to violence," Grégoire Owona, Deputy Secretary General of the CPDM Central Committee, told CRTV.
