Cameroon Ranks 15th Most Influential Country in Africa in 2024 Global Soft Power Index

In the latest Global Soft Power Index by Brand Finance, a brand valuation consultancy, Cameroon ranks as the 110th most influential country globally out of 193 ranked states and the 15th in Africa, according to the report published on February 29, 2024. With a score of 33.2 out of 100 points, the Central African nation has slipped one place in the overall ranking compared to the previous year when it held the 109th position with a score of 34.4.

This decline reflects the challenges Cameroon faces in realizing its soft power potential, including significant labor market issues, high poverty, and economic inequality levels, security concerns, high crime rates, and structural constraints such as energy shortages. Soft power is defined as a nation’s ability to influence various international actors’ preferences and behaviors (states, companies, communities, public, etc.) through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion.

Despite this drop, Cameroon remains the most influential country in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) globally. It ranks ahead of the Central African Republic (119th), Congo (146th), Equatorial Guinea (159th), Gabon (168th), and Chad (176th). At the continental level, the most influential African countries are Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco. Globally, the United States retains its position as the world leader in soft power.

Brand Finance’s annual Global Soft Power Index is based on each country’s scores from an annual survey of over 170,000 people in more than 100 countries. The survey gathers data on global perceptions of the 193 United Nations member states. The criteria considered include business and trade, governance, international relations, culture and traditions, media and communication, education and science, people and values, and a sustainable future.
