The implementation of the pilot phase of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiative started this week in the North region of Cameroon. Activities started with an information workshop in Garoua to encourage people to get enrolled, Alioum Garga, the representative of Governor Jean Abate Edi'i at this workshop said.

According to him, all administrative, political, religious, and traditional authorities will be involved in this phase, the main objective of which is to raise awareness among the population. The work will be coordinated, supervised, and regulated by Yaou Alhadji Zakari, the Regional Delegate for Public Health in the North Region.

As a reminder, the Cameroonian government has always placed public health among its priorities. In 2014, it launched the Health Voucher program in the three northern regions to subsidize health care for pregnant women and newborns. As of September 2022, the program had reached an enrollment rate of 57,392 women.
