Cameroon Red Cross To Develop Early Action Plan for Flood Response

The Cameroon Red Cross (CRC) launched a project on April 2, funded by the Italian government. The project is aimed at reducing the impact of disasters and strengthening community resilience against climate hazards, particularly floods. The project targets the Far North region, specifically the departments of Mayo-Danay, Logone-et-Chari, and Diamaré.

Cécile Akame Mfoumou, the National President of the CRC, described the initiative as a new humanitarian approach to disaster management. The CRC and its partners will spend two days (April 2-3) developing an early action protocol, essentially a contingency plan, to guide the swift implementation of actions when weather or climate forecasts indicate a high likelihood of serious impact on a specific area.

Flooding is a common issue in the Far North region, with torrential rains and high waters regularly damaging homes and crops, threatening livelihoods and food security. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Cameroon estimates that the 2022 floods affected over 314,000 people in the region. The flooding exacerbates tensions in communities already strained by armed conflict, as many households rely on their livestock and access to arable land, leading to conflicts between farmers and herders.
