Rodolphe Fonkoua (photo), the newly elected president of the Cameroon Medical Council (CMC), has convened an extraordinary general meeting to address the issue of unemployment among young doctors, fulfilling a promise he made during his campaign last December. According to a source close to the case, the meeting, scheduled for April 5 in Yaoundé, will feature a presentation by Fonkoua on a study he commissioned post-election, which provides updated statistics on the unemployment rate among young physicians.

The CMC’s fact sheet announcing the meeting confirms that the primary focus will be to assess the current state of unemployment in the medical field. However, Fonkoua also anticipates that the meeting will serve as a platform for proposing potential solutions to this issue.

Fonkoua, who was elected on the pledge of “restoring the dignity of the doctor,” had long advocated for addressing the prevalent unemployment among young doctors during his campaign. His campaign platform included several proposals, such as lobbying the government to create incentives that would encourage young doctors to practice in underserved areas across the country.
