African Nations Seek Cameroon's Expertise in Malaria Vaccine Implementation

This week, representatives from nearly ten countries, all advocates for the malaria vaccine, convened in Douala for a workshop, which opened yesterday, to exchange experiences. According to a statement from Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Health, these countries have journeyed to Yaoundé to glean insights from Cameroon’s experience, one of the first nations globally to implement routine vaccination for infants under six months.

Earlier this year, Cameroon incorporated the vaccine into its Expanded Programme on Immunisation, yielding promising results, as per the country’s health authorities. The National Malaria Control Programme estimates that over 15,000 children have already received the vaccine, marking a positive beginning.

Health Minister Malachie Manaouda attributes this success to the political commitment at the highest level of the state. He frequently emphasizes that systematic vaccination aligns with President Paul Biya’s vision. Furthermore, the Prime Minister oversees the integration of this vaccine into the Expanded Programme on Immunisation. The Ministry of Public Health also notes that Cameroon has effectively navigated the misinformation campaign surrounding this malaria vaccination initiative.
