Eleven people were freed during an army operation in a separatist camp in Kikaikom, Menyong Gilbert Sunday, the senior divisional officer of Bui, in crisis-ridden North-West, announced last October 4. According to his statement, 10 men and one woman were freed and several weapons recovered as well.
Kidnapping is a guerrilla tactic used by the separatists, either as a means of intimidation and pressure or as a means of financing the war with the ransoms collected. Several people have been kidnapped in the crisis regions of the North-West and South-West. Some hostages were released and others killed.
In June 2021, at least six regional public administration officials were kidnapped in the Ndian region of the South-West and the kidnappers demanded ransom of between XAF28 and 32 million for each of them. Their remains were found two years later after more than two years without any news of them.
