Several people were killed in Egbekaw, a locality not far from the town of Mamfe, in the troubled South-West region, last night. According to numerous eyewitness accounts, armed men suspected of being separatist fighters killed 25 people –some say 30 people were killed– and burnt down many houses.
Local witnesses report that the gunmen entered the houses, dragged the occupants out, shot them, and set fire to the houses. For the time being, local officials are yet to confirm the accounts.
The attack comes at a time of relative calm in the North-West and South-West regions, where a separatist war has been raging since 2017. According to international organizations such as the International Crisis Group, the conflict has already claimed around 6,000 lives.
