Nicholas Nkongho Manchang, the sub-divisional officer of Bamenda II in the North-West region, has been missing since Tuesday evening. Manchang was reportedly abducted near Ntumbaw, in the Donga Mantung department while traveling to Nkambe for the inauguration of the new divisional officer. At least five other individuals were also abducted alongside him.
Sources close to separatist groups claim the ASA, a militia loyal to exiled leader Samuel Sako Ikome, is responsible. The ASA operates in Donga Mantung and Boyo and has been linked to deadly attacks on security forces, including a January 31st mine ambush in Boyo.
Manchang, appointed sub-divisional officer in June 2020, is not the first official targeted by separatists. In February 2018, the Batibo sub-divisional officer was kidnapped and killed, while the Noni sub-divisional officer was abducted but released soon after in November of the same year.
