DGSN Mbarga raiders Crackdown on Police Corruption and Harassment on Public Highways

The delegate general for national security (DGSN), Martin Mbarga Nguelé, has ordered regional delegates and mobile intervention group commanders to “take all necessary measures to effectively combat corruption and police harassment on the public highway,” according to a message dated March 4, seen by SBBC. This directive follows “multiple complaints of police harassment by road users ” recorded by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (Conac).

The DGSN also instructed his staff to adhere to the guidelines outlined in a June 2023 message, which prohibited the confiscation of identity documents, even expired ones, from users during checks.

In a report on the state of corruption in Cameroon in 2022, presented at the end of 2023, Conac revealed that with 169 denunciations received, the national police and the national gendarmerie rank fourth among the most denounced administrations.

The report indicates that police officers and gendarmes have gained notoriety on the public highway for scamming motorists, exploiting road users at police stations and gendarmerie units, and illegally increasing the fees for issuing national identity cards, among other acts. These actions have led to the national police force being recognized as one of the most corrupt administrations in the country.
