NOCC Predicts Record-Breaking Rainfall for Multiple Regions

Armand Soleil Bata, the head of the climate forecasting department at the National Observatory on Climate Change (NOCC), warned last week that Cameroon could experience record-breaking rainfall over the next three months, surpassing levels seen in the past fifty years. The Centre, South, West, East, and Littoral regions are expected to be most affected.

The onset of this heavy rainfall is anticipated in the latter half of March. However, the country’s major cities, Yaoundé and Douala, have already experienced the season’s initial downpours.

The forecasts have raised concerns among local authorities, particularly in Douala, where efforts are underway to prevent further flooding this year. The city council has initiated a project to clean up the drains, with Mayor Roger Mbassa Ndine personally overseeing the work on the drain leading to the Wouri, the city’s main river.

In a statement to the Cameroon Tribune, Mayor Ndine explained, “The drain is being straightened to enhance water flow. We’re moving upstream of the drain to ensure it can effectively combat flooding in the event of heavy rain.”
