Minister Nalova Lyonga Warns of Zero Tolerance After School Violence Incident

Secondary Education Minister Nalova Lyonga visited the government Bilingual Technical High School (GBTHS) Nsam in Yaoundé on January 9, following an altercation involving students and bladed weapons the previous day, according to national radio. Addressing students, teachers, and school officials, Lyonga emphasized the government's commitment to combating school violence as part of its broader campaign against insecurity in schools. She also reminded students of the criminal consequences of engaging in violent behavior.

Cameroon's education law, enacted on April 4, 1998, strictly prohibits violence in any form. "The physical and moral integrity of pupils is guaranteed in the education system... physical abuse and all other forms of violence, discrimination of any kind, the sale, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and drugs are therefore prohibited," states Article 35 of the law. Despite these regulations and regular ministerial reminders about school conduct, violence has escalated in recent years, leading to tragic incidents.

In December 2022, the government held an international symposium aimed at finding solutions to eliminate or at least reduce violence in schools. The conference concluded with around twenty recommendations, including extending video surveillance to all schools, conducting unannounced searches, securing school premises with fences, reducing student populations in overcrowded schools, drafting a code of ethics for secondary education, and enhancing collaboration between schools and the Ministry for the Promotion of Women and the Family. This collaboration aims to extend interventions to the families of students affected by violence.
