On July 11th, Max Mbella Edjenguele (Photo), the divisional officer of Dschang in the Menoua division, issued a press release announcing a crackdown on "unscrupulous traders" who use formalin to preserve and ripen products. "Consumers of food products (bananas, plantains, fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish) have raised concerns about the use of formalin by some traders to ripen or preserve these products," wrote Max Mbella Edjenguele.
The administrative authority also urges the population to remain vigilant and report any traders found guilty of such practices. "Unannounced inspections will be carried out in markets and shops to seize goods unfit for consumption," he assured.
Max Mbella Edjenguele strongly criticizes these traders, stating that "in their relentless pursuit of easy profits, they clearly pose a serious threat to public health." Indeed, a nutritionist points out that injecting formalin into food is prohibited as it is a carcinogenic substance that can affect organs such as the liver and stomach.
