On March 14, 2021, Ines Danielle Ondoa Balla, regional president of the National Union of Journalists of Cameroon (SNJC) in the Southwest, issued a communiqué announcing the abduction of Fame Bonyui, a journalist working at the South West regional station of state-run broadcasting corporation CRTV.

Citing family sources, the communique indicated that Fame Bonyui was abducted by unidentified gunmen, outside her house in Buea, on the night of Saturday, March 13, 2021. The communiqué also condemned "this despicable act" reminding that journalists were watchdogs whose activities contribute to "the creation of a free and peaceful society."

The journalist has been released by the kidnappers, however. According to family sources, the abducted journalist was released on the night of Sunday, March 14. But, the sources did not mention whether the XAF14 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers (according to some colleagues) was paid.

Since the onset of the anglophone crisis in 2016, journalists have been repeatedly targeted by armed separatist groups.
