School Closure Affected 200,000+ Children in North-West/South-West this Year, UNOCHA Says

More than 246,000 children in war-torn North-West and South-West regions (Noso) are unable to attend school due to ongoing insecurity, according to a report released by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on February 12.

While there has been a decrease in school closures compared to last year, when 54% remained shut, an estimated 41% (2,875 out of 6,970) haven't opened their doors since the start of the academic year in September 2023, OCHA said.

Armed group attacks are likely a key reason for the slow reopening. OCHA documented 25 acts of violence against students and schools in 2023, with two major spikes: 8 in February during the Youth Day celebrations and 7 in September at the start of the school year.

The most recent attack, on February 11 in Nkambe, North-West, resulted in the death of a student and multiple injuries, drawing condemnation from national and international figures.
