For its new Coronavirus vaccination campaign, Cameroon targets at least 500,000 people vaccinated within five days. The said campaign was launched yesterday March 16, with the deployment of mobilizers and vaccinators nationwide. Its aim is to administer " doses of Sinopharm, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines to protect the population from a possible coronavirus outbreak,” the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) reminds.
In an interview with the health news website L'Urgentiste, Andreas Njoh Ateke, EPI Deputy permanent secretary, indicated that the new campaign was aimed at rapidly boosting Covid-19 vaccination coverage in Cameroon.
According to the latest EPI figures, 8% of the total population has received a dose of the vaccine in Cameroon. By deploying its teams nationwide, the program hopes it will pass the 10% vaccine coverage mark by the end of the five days the campaign will last.
By the end of 2022, the government’s ambition is to reach at least 40% vaccine coverage ratio. In that regard, it decided to change its strategy. Indeed, during the previous campaigns, it used to focus on public spaces. But, the new strategy is to get closer to the population with more door-to-door vaccinations. This strategy will also boost the vaccine acceptance of a population still defiant against the vaccine, the EPI expects.
