In a meeting with Cameroon’s President Paul Biya on Wednesday, Liu Guozhong, the Vice Premier of China’s State Council, discussed the state of cooperation between Yaoundé and Beijing, a relationship that spans over 50 years. The meeting, which lasted approximately 50 minutes, was part of Liu’s official visit to Algeria, Cameroon, and Tanzania scheduled for January 15 to 24, as announced by the Chinese government on January 12.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Mao Ming, stated on their website that China is eager to collaborate with developing countries, including African nations, to implement various global initiatives. These include the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. The goal is to advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization, progressing towards building a community with a shared future for mankind.

In 2018, President Biya visited China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. During his visit, Biya expressed hope for further progress in the cooperative relations between the two countries. Five cooperation agreements were signed to strengthen this strategic partnership.

China has become a key partner in Cameroon’s development, financing numerous major infrastructure projects in various sectors such as energy, roads, ports, sports facilities, health care, and social housing. Funding is provided through loans and grants from various donors including the Chinese government, China Exim Bank, and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), China remains Cameroon’s leading customer, supplier, and investor. In the first half of 2021, trade between the two countries exceeded 410 billion US dollars, marking a 38.2% increase year-on-year.
