In less than a month, Cameroon has registered 61 new deaths of Covid-19, rising from 462 on 23rd January to 523 deaths on 18th February. At the same date, the country had a total of 33,749 positive cases, meaning 4,132 new cases. "As we can see, the situation is becoming worrying again," expressed the Minister of Public Health (Minsanté), Manaouda Malachie, in a tweet on February 18th, 2021.
At the same time, the number of patients on oxygen is 38 compared to 14 three weeks ago. The number of patients interned in care units has followed the same upward trend. On the other hand, the cure rate has taken a downward trend from 96% to 93%.
Manaouda Malachie invites his fellow citizens to "scrupulously respect the measures enacted by the Head of State”.
"People continue their activities in schools and universities, in transportation, in markets, without following the restriction measures as if the pandemic is over. This does not bode well with the English variant of the virus, which has already killed one person in neighboring Gabon," a Doctor said.
Fortunately, he notes that Cameroon should receive its first doses of Covid-19 vaccine for health workers in the coming weeks. According to official figures, between March 2020 and February 2021, more than a thousand health workers were infected and about 20 died.
