Cameroon opens polio coordination unit in Far North region amid rising cases

The Ministry of Public Health (Minsante) has inaugurated a new coordination unit in Maroua, the capital of the Far North region, to bolster efforts against vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly polio, which has seen a resurgence in recent years. Experts attribute this rise in cases to the region's ongoing security crisis, flooding, and intertribal clashes. The new unit aims to curb the spread of polio by facilitating widespread vaccinations.

Managed by the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), the unit will not only house EPI activities but also serve as a collaborative hub for all stakeholders involved in immunization and combatting vaccine-preventable diseases.

The initiative aligns with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a public-private partnership involving national governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The GPEI's goal is to eradicate polio outbreaks globally.
