Anglophone crisis: Fon Nweh II accused of colluding with separatist militias

On June 16, 2023, Menyong Gilbert Sunday, the prefect of the Bui division in Kumbo, sent a warning letter to the Fon de Mbiame, a first-class chief in the North-West region. The administrative authority accuses the traditional authority of compromising the gradual return to peace in the department by maintaining "incestuous relations with enemy forces."

On June 14, 2023, the terrorists visited your chiefdom and ordered all the Mbororos [an ethnic group, ed. note] to come out en masse to welcome you back from the United States, or risk suffering their wrath. The people who escorted you back from Mbonso to your palace in Mbiame were led by terrorists,” the letter accuses  Fon Nweh II of Mbiame who returned from the United States on June 11 and was first welcomed to Yaoundé by his subjects living in the capital.

Furthermore, Prefect Menyong Gilbert Sunday accuses Fon Nweh II of "giving information to terrorists on the movements of defense and security forces, and organizing the kidnapping of peaceful civilians for ransom to share the booty.

When on July 8, 2022, a group of separatists murdered the Mbiame brigade commander, "you showed no sign of sympathy or concern about this unfortunate incident," the prefect adds in his letter.  The Fon is also accused of the same coldness when a policeman was killed by armed men on June 15.

Apart from accusing the Fon of colluding with armed separatists, the administrative authority does not appreciate the fact that the Fon Nweh II of Mbiame boycotted official ceremonies and the inauguration of a sub-prefect in 2022. "You have never taken part in a public ceremony in Mbiame. When the new Mbven sub-prefect was inaugurated on August 25, 2022, you were not present at the event, which took place just a few meters from your palace. What's more, you also boycotted the youth festival on February 11, 2023, and the national holiday on May 20, 2023, and instead mobilized your population to work on the Mbonso farms," Prefect Menyong Gilbert Sunday wrote.

He also reminded the Fon that, as an administrative assistant, he needs to be loyal to the State, fight crime, and work for national unity.  Fon Nweh II of Mbiame is yet to officially react to the accusations.
