Laquintinie Hospital recently implanted a pacemaker, a first in its history, Minister of Public Health Malachie Manaouda announced on X (Formerly Twitter). According to the official, the successful implant demonstrates that the transformation of the Cameroonian healthcare system “is progressing”, “per the vision of the Head of State, HE Paul BIYA.”
Laquintinie indicates that this first implant is a “major innovation” that will save patients the systematic need for costly medical evacuations for an operation they could have in Cameroon.
The operation was successfully performed on October 19 by a team led by cardiologist Louis Paulin Mondouagne. It was eagerly awaited by medical circles as it had been scheduled since June 2023– the schedule was announced by Prof. Noël Emmanuel Essomba, Director of Laquintinie Hospital, at a press conference.
A pacemaker is a small device that “continually monitors the heart and sends an electrical impulse to pace [it] when the heart's own rhythm is interrupted, irregular, or too slow," according to Medtronic, the world leader in medical technologies.
