Cameroon will host the fourth edition of the International Mining Convention and Exhibition of Cameroon (Cimec) and a meeting of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) Council of Ministers from May 22 to 24, 2024.

The OACPS meeting aims to "analyze the report and recommendations made at the OACPS experts' meeting on critical minerals needed for the energy transition," according to Mines Minister Fuh Calistus Gentry.

This follow-up to a previous meeting in Zambia seeks to establish the OACPS' position and options regarding the European Union's proposed regulation on securing critical raw materials.

"The key issue is where processing will take place," said Minister Gentry, referring to the potential for EU processing or utilizing OACPS member countries with critical mineral resources and the necessary energy infrastructure.

According to the national mining company, Sonamines, the country's subsoil is rich in critical minerals, including lithium, rare earths, platinum group elements, copper, graphite, and others. These minerals are found "in the form of geochemical anomalies and mining districts across the national territory," Sonamines explains.
