Construction of a long-awaited fire rescue center in Douala's Bassa industrial zone, known for its high-risk chemical, steel, and metallurgy industries, is finally moving forward after a key agreement was signed.

On February 19, Defense Minister Joël Beti Assomo, joined officials from the industrial zone management agency MAGZI and leading ferrous metals producer Prometal to sign a framework agreement and break ground for the project, initially established via presidential decree in 2004.

The project, estimated to cost XAF1 billion, will be funded by Prometal as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts. Upon completion, the center will be handed over to the National Fire Brigade, becoming the third in Douala alongside existing facilities in Ngodi and Bonaberi.

"This partnership aims to bolster fire response capabilities not just within the industrial zone, but across the entire Douala city and its surrounding areas," the defense ministry said in a statement.

The project's urgency was highlighted by a fire at a Prometal plant in January 2023, which exposed the zone's vulnerability to industrial hazards. The new center, planned for a 3,000-square-meter site, will be equipped to prevent and manage such disasters, enhancing safety for businesses and residents alike.
