Urban Transport: Cameroon Headed for a New XAF50 Taxi Fare Increase

The government and transport unions agreed to raise urban and intercity fares following a 15% fuel price increase, aiming to ease the burden on transporters.

The deal, reached on February 19, sees taxi fares rise to XAF350 during the day and XAF400 at night, up from XAF300 for both. Intercity transport fares also increased to XAF16 per kilometer from 14.

The unions had initially requested an XAF45 increase for taxi fares but accepted the 50 rise due to probable coin shortages.

"We can worry less about compensating for fuel costs now," Deffo Sokeng, president of the interurban transport union, told RFI.

The agreement is expected to be formalized by a Prime Ministerial decree soon, while the Ministry of Commerce reminded transporters to only charge the approved fares.

However, some carriers, particularly in Yaounde, have already raised taxi fares to XAF400, defying the agreement. Some intercity transport agencies have also raised their prices, justifying this decision by the increase in the price of super and diesel fuel, which have risen to XAF840 and 828 respectively, representing an increase of XAF110 and 108 respectively. The government condemned these "illicit increases" and threatened sanctions, reiterating the need for collaboration with unions.
