CRTV Blames Exorbitant Fees for Blackout of Libya-Cameroon Match Yesterday

On Tuesday, November 21, Cameroon faced Libya in Benghazi as part of the second day of World Cup 2026 qualifiers. The match ended with a 1-1 draw but, unfortunately, Cameroonian fans were unable to watch their favorite team's match on Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV). The public broadcaster explains that it was unable to secure the match’s broadcasting rights due to the excessive fees demanded by the company holding the rights.

"The company holding the broadcasting rights for this competition made a financial offer that was more than 100% higher than for the qualifiers for the last World Cup. This amount was deemed high by CRTV, which responded with a counter-offer aligned with standard industry practices," said CRTV CEO Charles Ndongo in a statement released on the afternoon of November 21, without disclosing the amount of the bid.

"Since the negotiations were not finalized before the commencement of the match (at 5 p.m. local time, editor's note), the rights-holding company unilaterally opted to deny CRTV access to the broadcast signal,” the release adds.

CRTV’s inability to broadcast the match sparked widespread criticism and ridicule on social media, particularly given CRTV's prior announcement it would broadcast it on its Sports channel. Acknowledging the public's disappointment, Ndongo tendered his "sincere apologies" for the situation.
