Diplomatic Network Applauds Cameroon's Pursuit of Justice in Zogo Killing

One year after the brutal killing of Cameroonian radio host Martinez Zogo, the Diplomatic Network Initiative of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) is urging authorities to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. However, doubts surrounding the probe persist, fueled by delays and allegations of manipulation.

In a statement, the diplomatic network initiative, a consortium of 40 countries promoting journalist safety, recognized the Cameroonian government's efforts to investigate the Zogo case. However, many within the Cameroonian public and media remain less convinced. The inquiry, currently stalled at the Yaoundé military court for months, has drawn criticism for its slow pace. The Syndicat national des journalistes du Cameroun (SNJC), a prominent journalists' union, recently called on its members to maintain pressure on authorities for answers.

Adding to the concerns, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) cited unnamed sources in its press freedom report alleging potential manipulation of the investigation. Lawyers for Zogo's family also suspect tampering, suggesting attempts to alter the narrative against initial suspects.

Businessman Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga, former counter-espionage chief Léopold Maxime Eko Eko, and Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Danwe, allegedly the leader of the Zogo kidnapping, are currently charged with "complicity in torture" while awaiting the conclusion of the inquiry. Lieutenant-Colonel Pierrot Narcisse Nzie, who replaced two previous investigating judges in December, currently oversees the case. In addition, Jean-Pierre Ghoumo has also replaced Eko Eko as the head of the Directorate General of External Intelligence (DGRE).
