Urban Transport: Taxi Fares Officially Increased from XAF300 to 350

Mincommerce Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana signed, Monday, a decree revising the price scale for urban, suburban, and intercity transport. The new decree raises daytime fares in towns from XAF300 to 350, and nighttime fares (from 10pm) to XAF400. Daytime depot rates have also been increased from XAF2,500 to 3,000, with nighttime rates set at XAF3,500.

However, the Minister emphasized that these prices are maximum limits, and the actual fares are subject to negotiation between carriers. The fares for pupils, students, and people with reduced mobility remain unchanged.

For intercity and suburban transport by coach or bus, the fare increase is calculated on a per-kilometer basis, with adults paying XAF16 per kilometer. For instance, a passenger traveling the 225 km distance from Douala to Yaoundé would pay slightly over XAF4,000.

This fare increase follows the government’s decision to raise fuel prices at the pump, a change that has been in effect since February 3. It also comes after extensive discussions between the government and transport unions, who had repeatedly threatened to strike if fares were not adjusted.
