The African Broadcasting Union (ABU), the continent's largest professional radio and television organization, will host an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit from March 4-6, 2024. The summit aims to assess African media readiness for AI, develop regional policy recommendations, and explore the opportunities, risks, and ethical considerations of AI in content creation, targeting, and editorial processes.

The ABU believes that AI presents a significant opportunity for innovation and progress, especially in the media industry, where it offers unprecedented possibilities in content design, production, post-production, management, and audience targeting and profiling. However, the organization acknowledges that certain developments and uses of AI pose risks. The summit will serve as a platform to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by these technological innovations in the African media context.

Debates will focus on issues of ethics, automation of editorial processes, and the impact of AI on the diversity and integrity of information,” stated ABU’s Executive Director, Grégoire Ndjaka, in a press release published last December. The summit will convene high-level experts from Africa and other continents for forward-looking discussions grounded in the context of the potential, challenges, and impacts of AI on African media. The goal is to share experiences, develop strategies, produce concrete recommendations, and create synergies to ensure that African media keeps pace.

This summit follows a similar event organized by the ABU in Kigali, Rwanda, last November, aimed at raising awareness among African audiovisual organizations on the extraordinary potential, stakes, and impacts of AI on their activities and the foreseeable disruptions in their sector.
