Gendarmerie dismantled gang of false negative Covid-19 test certificate providers in Douala

On January 7th, the research brigade of the Costal Gendarmerie Legion arrested three individuals in an operation to dismantle a gang that issues fake Covid-19 test certificates in Doula.

According to information reported by Cameroon Tribune, the network operates near the Laquintinie Hospital, one of the treatment centers selected to receive suspected or confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Suspects illegally prepared and sold these false COVID-19 results for between CFA10,000 and CFA60,000. They also supply false medical certificates and false memos. The fraudulent attestations were made "almost perfectly", according to Cameroon Tribune. The hospital's management had been informed of the existence of this traffic and suspicions of internal complicity were weighing on certain hospital staff. However, the director, Pr Noël Emmanuel Essomba, denied it.

He reminds and cautions the public that only hospitals and screening centers set up as part of the response to Covid-19 are authorized to carry out the tests and deliver the results. The screening is "free" at sampling centers authorized to perform coronavirus tests.

As of January 28, Cameroon officially registered 30,313 confirmed cases, including 28,606 recoveries and 475 deaths.
