Yaoundé's Nkoabang Junction to be widened in a bid to improve traffic flow

The Nkoabang crossroads, Yaoundé's crucial eastern entrance point, will undergo "major" expansion works to tackle chronic traffic congestion, local authorities announced. Mayor Jean Francois Ondigui Owona confirmed the imminent project in a January 23 press release, stating it encompasses "widening the 2x2 lane carriageway from the Lycée de Nkoabang to the police station and relocating water and electricity networks."

The Nkoabang crossroads sits on Nationale N°10, serving as the capital's primary eastern gateway and a key transit point for goods bound for the East region, northern regions like Garoua-Boulaï, and neighboring countries like the Central African Republic and Chad. Additionally, it has become a crucial route for goods from Southern Sudan since the Sudanese Civil War.

However, this strategic importance has come at a cost. Heavy traffic and Yaoundé's urban expansion have choked the Nkoabang crossroads, creating long and frustrating delays for those entering or leaving the city from the east. Past attempts to clear the congestion haven't offered lasting solutions, prompting the major expansion project.

The project, expected to take around two years to complete, will likely cause temporary disruptions at the crossroads during construction, the mayor warned.
