Cameroon and Tunisia Strengthen Ties with Four New Cooperation Agreements

Paru le lundi, 29 avril 2024 16:55

Cameroon and Tunisia signed four new cooperation agreements following the 11th session of their joint high commission, which took place on April 27 in Yaoundé. The agreements were signed by Lejeune Mbella Mbella, Cameroon’s Minister of External Relations, and Nabil Ammar, the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad.

The agreements cover a range of areas, including a mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and service passports from both countries, a pact for cooperation in housing and urban development, an executive cooperation program in the arts and culture for 2024-2026, and a similar program for primary and secondary education during the same period.

These recent agreements underscore the commitment of both nations to strengthen their relationship, which has spanned nearly six decades. Numerous agreements already exist, regulating the ties between the two countries across a variety of sectors, including politics, culture, science, economy, commerce, education, and tourism. “Our cooperation has a rich history and has yielded positive results. Our relations are free from any issues. We both agree that we need to add depth to this political relationship that is based on trust,” the Tunisian minister stated in an interview published by Cameroon Tribune on April 29, 2024. He noted that both parties are exploring other sectors (ICT, SMEs, social economy, security and defense, medical training, agriculture, etc.) to further bolster their cooperation.

In line with this progress, Nabil Ammar announced that Tunisair, the national airline of Tunisia, will launch a new flight route to Douala, the economic powerhouse of Cameroon, by the end of 2024. This 11th session of the Cameroon-Tunisia high commission marks a significant milestone, taking place more than eight years after the last session, which was held in March 2016 in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. That session culminated in the signing of four cooperation agreements in the areas of higher education, health, tourism, and handicrafts.
