The electoral roll has registered 144, 817 new voters this year, in the framework of the ongoing revision, we learned during the first ordinary session of the Electoral Council of Elections Cameroon (Elecam), held on March 28. This brings Cameroon’s total registered voters to slightly over 7.5 million, out of an estimated population of over 20 million.

Elecam officials view this as positive news, having set a goal to increase the number of registered voters from 7.3 million to over 7.5 million by the end of this year’s electoral roll revision. The revision process, as outlined in Article 74 of the Electoral Code, begins on January 1 and concludes on August 31 each year.

In addition to increasing registration density, Elecam is also striving to register more young people, women, and individuals living with disabilities, “so that all social strata are taken into account,” according to Erik Essousse, Elecam’s Director General of Elections.

The agency tasked with organizing, managing, and supervising elections in Cameroon is on track to meet its objectives. Among the new registrants in the first quarter of this year were 90,124 women (62.23%), 101,848 young people (70.32%), and 129 individuals with disabilities.
