Limbe Road Controversy: Minister Courtes Denies Embezzlement Allegations

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (Minhdu) issued a press release on March 27, denying any involvement of Minister Célestine Ketcha Courtès in the defects observed on the Karata-Mukunda-Bojongo road section in Limbe, South-West region. The press release dismissed a recent video that suggested a scandal of embezzlement, estimated at at least seven billion FCFA, as “defamatory”.

The video claimed that the road maintenance contract was under the supervision of Minhdu and that the work was botched without any prior soil study. While acknowledging the poor state of the five-kilometer road, the Minhdu press release stated that the contracting authority was not responsible for the situation.

Courtès attributed the road’s condition to “inappropriate” use, specifically the frequent passage of heavy vehicles transporting dyke construction materials from the quarry owned by Mira Company.

On November 3, 2023, Courtès requested the Limbe Town Hall to ensure that Mira Company undertakes repair work on the road. The road was initially built to improve the urban road system ahead of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Cameroon in 2016.
