Last Sunday, Richard Tamfu, Esq. took to his Facebook page to declare his new political allegiance. He announced his decision to join the Cameroon Party for National Reconciliation, PCRN, a party under the leadership of President Cabral Libii. He expressed his firm belief in Libii’s vision, stating, “I am joining him in this fight to bring about the long-awaited change we all demand.”

The PCRN base responded with enthusiasm to Tamfu’s announcement, collectively welcoming the former official of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC. Tamfu had previously served in the MRC’s directorate alongside Maurice Kamto, holding the position of national secretary in charge of state reform and modernization. However, his tenure at the MRC was not without controversy. In June 2023, he publicly stated that Kamto, now 70, was too old to run for president in the 2025 elections. This led to his expulsion from the party after he declared his intention to replace Kamto as the head of the MRC.

Following his departure from the MRC, Tamfu took a sabbatical from politics, using this time to participate in television debates and gain media attention. He recently announced on his Facebook page that he has closed this chapter of his life and is starting a new one at the PCRN. He wrote, “After suspending my political activities for a while, I took time for deep reflection and analysis of the political situation in my country, Cameroon,” to explain his decision to join forces with Cabral Libii.

Richard Tamfu, a member of the Cameroon Bar Association, gained widespread recognition in 2018 when he defended journalist Mimi Mefo. Mefo was prosecuted by the Cameroonian judiciary for “spreading false news” in a tweet that implicated Cameroonian soldiers in the death of an American missionary. Tamfu is also known for his close relationship with Michèle Ndoki, another former MRC official who was expelled after announcing her candidacy for the party’s presidency.
