The Air Quality Monitoring Research Group (Aqmrg) is deploying a strategy to improve the monitoring of air quality in the city of Yaoundé. The consortium of researchers wants to install, in collaboration with local researchers, a network of low-cost sensors in the capital, we learned.

Initially, the group -housed at the University of Lagos- wanted to "address the unavailability of emission measurements and data gaps on air quality in Nigeria," with support from the U.S. State Department. Later, it came up with the idea of expanding the project to other countries, including Cameroon.

The project is expected to help control pollution and prevent the incidence of pollution-related diseases. According to the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, 1.1 million Africans died in 2019 because of air pollution.
