The Cameroon District Doctors Network (Remedic) has submitted a request to the Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda, seeking an ex gratia appeal to overturn the suspension of the salary and position of the Director of Messamena District Hospital in the Centre region. Remedic’s letter defends the director, stating, “Dr. Assamba has consistently demonstrated his dedication to his patients and his adherence to the highest standards of medical practice.”

The case dates back to January 23, when the divisional officer of Messamena issued a request for an explanation to Dr. Serge Assamba Mpom, accusing him of being absent from work between January 14 and 21. Mpom denounced this as administrative harassment. The situation escalated on March 18, when Minister Manaouda decided to suspend Dr. Mpom from his position as Director of Messamena District Hospital for breaches of ethics and professional conduct.

The decision immediately sparked controversy in the medical community. The Cameroon Medical Council (CMC) swiftly responded, deeming the sanction disproportionate and urging Minister Manaouda to rescind the sanction and instead initiate conciliation between Dr. Mpom and the divisional officer.

As of now, Minister Manaouda has not yet lifted the suspension, slated to last three months.
