The first case of coronavirus (Covid-19) was confirmed today March 6 in Cameroon.

The first case of coronavirus (Covid-19) was confirmed today March 6 in Cameroon. According to the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie, the patient is a 58-year-old French citizen who arrived on 24 February in Yaoundé. “The case was placed in solitary confinement in the Care Centre of the Yaoundé Central Hospital for appropriate treatment,” the official said.

The case was detected thanks to the “the active surveillance put in place by the country since the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic” in China. Cameroon has indeed put in place a response plan to prevent any importation of the disease into the country. The measure includes the strengthening of security at the country's entry points (airports, ports and land borders) and the establishment of reception centers in some health facilities for the management of cases by trained health personnel.

“All measures are being taken by the government to prevent the spread of the virus,” the minister said, asking citizens to not worry. The toll-free number (1510), he says, remains open to report any suspect case.

Cameroon is the eighth African country affected by Covid-19 after Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and South Africa.
